A VIOLENT THUNDERSTORM.
(SPECIAL TO "THS I'RESS.") WELLINGTON, February 17. At nn early hour on Saturday morning Wellington people were awakened by an unusually loud peal of thunder, which made tho houses tremble. It made a crashing noise, and from the fact that many people over a wide urea thought that their houses had been damaged, it is evident tliat an electrio explosion of most mnieual extent had taken plaoo somewhere over tlie city. Tho electric discharge had the effect, of t'-runorarily extinguishing all electric lights, ami people who wero awake and using the electric light wero in many instances considerably, alarmed. Tlie storm raged for a considerable time, the lightning being vivid and the thunder loud. Very heavy rain fell on Saturday. Thero were a few peals of thunder and a good deal of rain to-day. It is still close and "thundery." (mass association tblkobam.) WANGANUI, February 17. A fairly mnvere thunderstorm, accompanied by heavy rain, waa experienced here on Saturday afternoon. Heavy rain again set Tin this afternoon.
