THOUSANDS OF CHINESE THOUGHT TO HAVE PERISHED

HONG KONG, September 20.

Lord Elgin has telegraphed to Sir Matthew Natham, Governor of Hong Kong, King Edward's doep regret at the calamity. The King is grieved to hear of the immense loss of lifo among the Chinese, and expresses sympathy with the immediate sufferers and the whole of the Hong Kong community.

Tho Imperial Government has also sent condolences.

There are indications that several thousand of Chineso water-dwellers perished.
