THE HOSPITAL CONTROVERSY.
A REPLY TO MR C. M. GRAY. (rnsss ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, August 13. At a meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board, the chairman (Mr Moi»cd) relerred to a remark in reference to the efficiency ot tho Auckland Hospital as a training institution for nurses, tliat was recently mado by Mr C. M. Gray, M.H.R., at a| meeting at Christ church. Mr Gray was ' reported to havo said that tho Christ- i church Hospital had fal.oii. away la- I mentality {iurarg tho past lew years; ', that at one timo it was the best in : the colony for training purposes; but ' tliat "it had now fallen be low Auckland, which was saying a gnat deal." Mr MciLood said that this was a most unwarrantable reflection., as ' tho Auckland Hospital, in regard-, to tho training of nurses, stood in tho highest position in the colony, not even. excepting Wellington. Tho list of Auckland trained nurses now in im- ' portunt positions in other parts of the colony, which ho had before him, was a very considerable one. Or 84 certificated nurses registered at Auckland ! in December, 19(15, the number who | had passed tho State's examination was 3 ( J, or over 4o per cent. The mini- I ber registered at Wellington was 97, j or" whom 36 (37 per cent.) had passed tho examinations, whilst the Christchurch list .showed that 23 had passed out of a total of 63, this being equal to only 3-t per cent. There may havo been a slackness, but it was only for a short period, and since then tho Auckland Hospital had gained the special praise of Dr Macgrogor in regard to its training efficiency. It was resolved "That the chairman communicate with Mr Gray in reference to the matter."
