THE CHRISTCHURCH HOUNDS
A threatening' sky overhead, with occasional drizzle, wjs tho order of things on Saturday morniing, and no doubt prevented many people from attending the meet at Rolleston. However, rain held off all day. Shortly after noon Selby, \vii:nh ten and a half couple of hounds, trotted up the road from the meet, and hounds were thrown off in one of Mr Murisson's fields. A hare was soon afoot, and, crossing tho railway double, gave a nice run on Mr Rowkor's land of about one and a half miles over an easy country, and eventually escaped into a big plantation.. At the invitation of Mr Robinson, a try was made on. his country. A few resultless runs took place, hares in every case making on to forbidden country, of wihieh there is a good deal at tfhis season of the year, owing to owes having young lambs at- foot. Hounds having been whipped off from the big plantation above Mr Bowker's homestead, the Master took this opportunity of calling a. halt for lunch. In the afternoon three fields were drawn blank, and re-crossing the railway houn'tls started a hare. Taking a left-handed circle, hounds raced down the boundary fence dividing Mt Griggs farm from Mr MurissDii's, and bustled their quarry out cf a paddock of green oats, where she was squatting, back on to the same. line. Howover, scent began to fail, and the hounds survived two checks • in the end they absolutely lost all trace. Scent having evidently gone for good, hounds were packed up and jogged back to Rolleston.
