GREYMOUTH v ELLESMERE.
Th© Greymouth team, which arrived in Curistciiui-h on Tuesday, in order to play a series of matches in this utstrict, played its first game agaimv.- an i_.)k-mere team on Wednesday at lah>s- | ton. The following were tlie teams:— | Greymouth—Full-t/ack, Todd ; three- j quarters, Hartland, Parkinson and | O'Dounell; five-eighths, Sweet-nan and Chapman; winga. Wade and Kettley (captain); forwards. Nichoils, Murray, Birmingham Anderson. West, Mason and I .irci-11. J_.ik-_.meiv—Full-back, Oldridgo; three-quarters, Yauglian, Murray, Finchum; five-eighths, R. Coe and Bruce Coe; halt, Jas. Rennie; for-■-vards, Gilbert. Slieasley, Hark'or. Shand, Jamieson. Russell, Bcamsley and Brown (wing). The ground wa* in a very heavy state, and altogether against a fast aud scientific exposition of the game. Play through out was almost entirely confined to the forwards, in which department the teams were fairly evenly matched. Iv the- pad: the EHesmere players held the advantage, but in the lociso rushes the Wct»t' Goa>.ter_> were rather tho better. Tlie Ellesmerc backs handled the greasy ball more accurately than did the visitors, but their passing rushes were not very effective, usually resulting in -.ending the bail straight across the ground. Although the homo team had the better cf the first, spell, they wero unable tc cross their 'opponents' line, a_d half-time was called without any score. In the second spell the Greymouth players showed impioved form, and as the result cf a forward ru_h Xicoll scored a try, which Whito converted. Elksinere then rallied, ami from a penalty kick Coo placed a goal. Towards tho close ot the game Ello-incie were again'attacking, but they failed to increase their fee-ore, and the ganio ended—(hey- j mouth 5 points, Ellesmerc 3 points. Air | F. Lill waa referee. During the evening the visitors were entertained by the Ellesmerc team. ELLESMERE SUB-UNION. Tho return match, Dunsandel v , Milltown, took placo ax Duiisamlol on i Saturday, and resulted -in a will for the home'team by 11 points to 3. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. Air H. Wright was referee. Lincoln College met Irwell on the College ground on Saturday, and a fast game resulted in a win for Irwell by 8 points to 5. Dr. Hilgendorp was referee.
