THE ROADS IN THE BACK BLOCKS.
fiETTLERS' GRIEVANCES. (RUBS ASSOCIATION TELBGRAK.) WELLINGTON, August 9. Mr A. E. Remington, M.H.R., waited on tho Hon. W. Hall-Jones this morning with a sheaf of grievances from the settlers in his electorate. He stated that tho roads round tho district where the Main Trunk line is l»o----ing constructed are impassable, and that he knew of three settler- who had left Raetihi district becauae they could do nothing with their holdings. Ti»__o settlers had not sold their sections. Ho urged that the service roads for the main trunk line should bo metalled before they liad to carry any traffic. The Minister recognised the hardships settlers had to undergo, but said everything possible was being done. A nuimber of the toads referred to would not be required shortly, and they would bo reasonably repaired by tho Department, which, however, oould jiot tako the responsibility for the damage caused by sawmill traffic. He urged settlers to bo patient. Th-sam© difiicultics had to be contended with in the north of Auckland and in Otago.
