POLICE COURT.

Mr V. G. Day, S.M., presided at the Police Court yesterday. I A first offender for drunkenness ooi | the railway platform was fined 10s or 48 hours' imprisonment. Two other first offenders were each fined 3s and costs. Thomas Navis -was charged with being an idle and disorderly person within the meaning of the Polioe Offences Act, in that ho habitually consorted with prostitutes. Constable Gibson said that tho accu6od resided in Salisbury Grove, and lived with women oi ill-fame. The accused had bean working this last eight days for a bricklayer. Constable Ward said that ho had known the accused for tho last two years. He visited the houso about a week ago and 1 saw several wcunen of bad character there. He believed accused had been working recently. TheTe had been numerous oomplaints about the house occupied by him. Tho Magistrate said that as this was , the first time that accused had been before the "Court he would dismiss the case. David Robertson, John Kitt, and Herbert Napier were each fined 10s and costs for riding bicycles on the footpath. M. W, Ferguson, for driving a vehiclo without a light, was fined 10s and costs; and Henry Hannibal, for riding a bicycle without a light, was fined £1 and costs. Selina Ohilds, alias Baxter, was charged with stealing 15s from Ellen Gascombo. Evidence was given b*/ complainant as to losing the money shortly after tho accused visited her ! house. Her son also stated th it when i tho accused came to tho houso his • mother w_s in tho front room, and he I was in tho kitchen. Tho money had been placed on tho mantelpiece in the I kitchen, and when the accused called J she asked him to go outside for a ; minute. He did so, and shortly after tho money was missing. Tho accused denied the charge, and tho Magistrate j dismissed the case. I Francis Michael Sellars (Mr Malley) ' was oharged with stealing.ono pair ot blaoiikets, valued at 18s, tho property of Robert Telfer; one heifer, valued at £2 3s, the property of Pyno and Co.; ono umbrella, valued at 15s, tbo property of John Coffee; and one bicycle, valued at £10, the property ot James Cox. Tho accused was remanded 1 until to-day. James Clifford pleaded guilty to tho theft of a wheelbarrow and quantity of tools, to the via hie of £o, from the New Zealand Electrical Construction Company; ono and a-half tins of varnish, valued at 30s, from J. M. Heywood and Co., of Sydenham, on or about March 31st; and a bicycle from A. S. Johnston on May 12tb. Mr ' Cassidy appftared for the defendant. He stated that the accused had hitherto borne a good character, and his brother-in-law would undertake to make good the loss. Tho Magistrate fined accused £o, and ordered him to pay the valuo of Johnston's bicycle, and entered convictions on the other charges.
