The Wakatu sailed yesterday afternoon for Akaroa, via Littlo AkaJoa tnd Do Bon's Bay. She will return to-day. and will sail again to-morrow for Port Robinson, Kaikoura, and Wellington. The steamer John Anderson will soil to-day for Akaroa, via the Bays, returning here tomorrow. The Canterbury Steam - Ship Company's steamer Storm arrived yesterday afternoon from Dunedin, Oamaru. and Timaru. and left again later on for Wellington and Wanganui. She will return here, via Dunedin, Oaranru, and Timaru. next week. The ship Da'.cairnio, from Liverpool, via Dunedin, waa reported aa having left Port Chalmers on Wednesday afternoon for Lytteiton. It is stated, however, that the vessel has no cargo for Lytteiton, but is bound to Wellington. The schooner Amelia Sims is loading produce for Wellington, and will sail to-day or to-morrow. From Wellington tho vessel proceeds to Havelock to load timber for Akaroa, and not for Lytteiton, as previously announced. The mammoth White Star liner. Athenio sailed at 4.45 p.m. for Timaru and Gisborne. litp Athenio is the first of the large 12,0COton liners to visit Timaru. From that port she goes to Gisborne, and afterwards returns to Lytteiton. Sho ie announced to s_il finally from Wellington for London on July 19th. * The French cnnro steamer Breiz Huel, from New York, via Sydney, Auckland, and Wellington, arrived here yesterday morning, and took up a discharging berth at No. 7 wharf. The vessel has about £0,000 caeca of oil to discharge here, particulars of _ which canjo were published yesterday. It is stated that '.ho vessel will remain here about a week, after which sho goes on to Port Chalmers to discharge the balance of her cargo. Sydney papers stato that the steamer has beon chartered to load a cargo of coal at Sydney for tho West Const of South America, tinder the auspices of tho Commonwealth Line. The Brciz Huel, which vi?!'.ed Lytteiton in September last, w ntill commanded by Captain Audrain. Tho steamer Isleworth has been fixed on time charter to run in the Ocean Island phfaphate trade. The barques Zclateur and Mnnurcwa, ard the brigantino Defiance, which all lift Kaipara on the 6th inst.. with cargoes of kauri, made a close race to Srdney. They arrived at Sydney en tho 17th inst.. the Zelateur at GJSO a.m., the Mar.urewa at 12.5 p.m., and the Defiance at 5.10 p.m. Furthor particulars of tho cargo of the steamer Oakburn- which wan lost recently near Capetown, have been received. Tho ve'iel carried 7&.1 tone.. 1508 tons fcr West Australia. 2079 tons for Sydncv, 5.17 tons for Auckland. 1237 tons for Wellington. 1115 tons for Lytteiton. and ICO3 tons for Dunedin. The approximate valuo of the cargo wo? £200000. The barque Abys'tnia. now on her way from Hull. England, to New Zealand, has been rherto-ed to lord c.ml at Newcastle for the West Coast of America. The steamer Pocahontas, which visited Lyt-

telton last month, has been chartered to *Make a trip from Sydney to Ocean Island and Nauru, with general cargo, and back again to Sydney and Melbourno with phosphates. The Tyser lino have chartered tha steamer Courlfield, 459-2 tons register, to load at New York fot Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland. Wellington, Lyitelton and I'ort Ch.-.lraers. Sho is to leavo New York about July 21th. The Norwegian ship Colonna, 1307 tons, haß been chartered to bring a general cargo from Hamburg to Auckland. Following are tho present ruling rates of freight from Newcastle to Now Zealand ports: Auckland. 8e; Gisborne, 17s; Napier, 10a; Wellington, 6s ed; Wanganui, 14s; Lytteiton. Ss 9d; Timaru, 9s; iilufi, 10s; and Dunedin, 10s. \. There was a heavy sea on the Westport bar. c.nd also on the Greymouth bar on Wednesday. The Canopus, which left Lytteiton at noon on Tuesday, crossed inwards at Westport at 1.5 p.m. yesterday. The Fcderal-Hpulder-Shiro liner Oswestry Or.mge. which will leave Wellington about July 19th for London and West of England ports, will bo followed in turn by tho s'earners Devon and Morayshire. The Norwegian steamer Thode Fagelund arrived at Wellington on Tuesday afternoon from Singapore, via Bunbury, with cargo for Wellington, Lytteiton and tho Bluff. Tbe steamer left Bunbury on the 9th June, and encountered heavy easterly weather to Port Kembla, where she put in for coal. The voyage was resumed on the 19th, and heavy S.W. gales, with high seas and rain squalls, prevailed during tho run across the Tasnian Sea. Being heavily loaded, tho stoimer took a good deal of water on her decks, but outBide of tho carrying away of a' few tarpaulins no damage was sustained. Tho vessel has 57G.000 feet cf jarr.ih timber for Wellington, and 424,000 feet of jnrrah for Lytteiton. She hae also M'JOO tons of phosphates from Singapore for the Bluff. The Shaw Savill Company advise that tho Mnmp.ri will be the next steamer leaving London on tho 2Cth July, tho lonio being kept back to take tho railing on August "3rd. The K«ngatira is to s_il for Port Chalmers ar.d LytteUon on tho 30th, and tho Athcnic v/ill leavo London ou the 20th September. . The Union Company's steamer Wairuna is to bo docked at Port Chalmers this week for cleaning and painting. After coming out nhe sails for Newcastle diwc.t. The Union Company's steamer Kantane is to go from Sydney to Tasmania, to load a cargo of hardwood for a New Zealand oort, probably Bluff. " Captain Drewette, who has been ashore on leave for two weeks, will rejoin the Koonya this week.
