A VICTORIA CROSS HERO. United Press Association—By Electrio TelegTaph—Copyright. LONDON, June 27. Colonel Mark S. Bell, a native of Sydney, who gained distinction and won the Victoria Cross in tho Ashanti war of 1874, is dead. [Lieutenant Bell—as ho then was— as an officer of Engineers, was placed in charge of a gang cf natives who were told off to do certain work at the engagement of Ordashu, on tho March to Kumassi. Tho natives had to faco a frontal and flank fire, besides being in danger from tho fire of tho native levies on tho British side, and thoy nere without tho usual covering party. A cable mcvHsge i-cceivcd this morning from London announces tho death of Vernon Wylie, only son of Mr Andrew Wylie, of tho well-known legal firm of Skerrett and Wylie. Deceased -tras a native of Wellington, twentytktreo years of age, and sorvcrd his term of apprenticeship as an engineer here. Ho went to England about eighteen month.-! ago to 6tudy electrical engineering. Appendicitis was the cause of death. ,
Mrs W. A. Burt, a well-known and greatly respected resident of Rangiora since 1857, died on Wednesday evening. She arrived in tho ship Crshmerc with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. E. Ivory, in October, 1855. Her husband, who was ono of the first CounciHoJß of the town, and three sons and four daughters mourn Iter leo^.
