EDUCATION BOARD.
+ The North Canterbury Education Board met yesterday. Mr t7. .Ronnie fchairmau) presiding. There wore also present.:-—Dr. Hight, , and Messrs T. W. Adams, C. H. A. T. Opie, M. Dalziel, and 11. W. l?eryman.
Before taking tlu v general business, Mr Opie moved—"That this Board desires to place on record its appreciation of the eminent services rendered in the- cause of education by tho late Hon. ft. J. Sr-ddon, Minister for Education, during his term of office, and its deepest sympathy with Mrs Sorldor? and her family in their sad bereavement." .Speaking to the motion, he said that it was as Minister of Education, that the Board desired to express its appreciation of the work of the late Premier. When ho became Minister for Education many reforms the Board was looking forward to beoaino galvanised into lilt?. Technical education bad advanced by leaps and bounds, the Cadet movement had made great progress, while. Mr Seddon's humanity was evidenced by the fact that he placed the Teachers' Superannuation Bill on the . Statute Book, making provision for teachers when they grew too old for service.
Dr. Higlit seconded the motion, which was carried iv the usual way.
Tlio report of the Appointments Committee recommended tho following:— Amberlev, Miss M. Hardey. assistant secondary department; Darficld, Miss F. Williams, assistant secondary department : Pigeon Bay (main), Miss IC. Sloan, mistress: The Peaks, Miss K. Montgomery, mistress. The following resignations were received and accepted :— Ashburton Forks. Miss K. DoTierty, as mistress; Belfast (side). Mr H. P. Pole, <is master; Charing Cress, Mrs A. Brougham, as mistress; Rakaia South. Mr G. H. White, as master; Scargill, Mr J. Maddison, as'master.— The report was adopted. The principal clauses in the Works Committee's report were as folloHs:— .Several communications were received in regard to school furniture, it being agreed to reply that tho Board hope to mak« further improvements uitcr the Exhibition, at which all the latest designs, in school furniture will be shown. With reference to the recent enquiry of the Board of Managers of tho Christchurch Technical Classes as to whether the Board will grant further ground as necessity arises, tho Board is recommended to reply that though it cannot'pledge its «uceessors in office, yet the. Board of Managers may rest assured that the Education Board will favourably consider any application that may require to be made for building sites.—Adopted. The report of the Normal School and Technical Committee stated, inter alia, that it was decided to advertise for two instructors in nhvsical training, that tho most suitable time for camps or instruction was the week prior to the Christmas holidays' vacation, that instructions had been given to convey half of tho South brJt sito to the Bon id of Managers of the Technical Classes, and that Mr Dromgcol bad been asked to prepare a. scheme for instruction in agrienlturc, so thnt be could meet the teachers at an early da to.—Adopted. The Board then went into Committee to consider departmental matters.
