ARBOR DAY COMMITTEE,

A meeting of the Arbor Day Celebration Committee was held in the Gloucester street Chambers last evening, when Mr J. Spiller presided. The Secretaiy stated that the name of the League had been altered to the New Zealand League, with Christchurch as a centre, in order that the movt--ment should l>e ono for the whole colony. Ho had written to Sir John Hall, as Mayor of Christchurch, asking him if he would fill the position of president, and had received a reply accepting tho position. The secretary of the School Committeis' Association forwarded a resolution passed by them, suggesting that Arbor Day should be observed on IMay 24th, instead of May 31st, to avoid making two holidays. As the date had been already fixed for this year, tho matter was left over till a future meeting.

The Beautifying Association forwarded the sum of £3 3s towards the Arbor Day expenses. The Spreydon Road Board wrote in reply to a request for a donation, that; tho County Council was tho proper body to apply to. TII3 'following League officers were appointed:—President, Sir John- Hall; vice-presidents, Dr. Cockayne, Mtj.'S.R. Webb (Mayor of Lytteiton), Mfc,.Oj A. Lees (Mayor of Sumner), '■••"' Mr H. J. C. Jokyll (Christchurch Beautifying Aasociat on), Mr G. D. Macfarlano (Mayor of New Brighton), and Mr J. Ricjmrdsoji (Mayor of Woejston); J. A. Adams, J.'ll. Brunt, G. Cartnichael, L. King, C. E. Pa.g?, W. Pratt, Dr. Russell, J. Spiller, tho chairmen of all sc-hool oomniittoes, and the heads of all schools.

Mr H. G. Ell, M.H.R., recommended a number of trees suitable for. planting. It was decided to adopt his suggestions, and also to plant fifty veronicas.

Mr Aitkcn reported 1 that there was rather a superfluity of talent in coninectioni with the concert, but he had drafted a programme which he thought would meet with their approval. Th- programme was approved, and officials wore appointed to superintend the concert.
