SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

* • Tho East Christchurch School Committee met last week. Present—Messrs J. Jauiicaon (chairman), A. C Andrews, J. It. Brunt, D. Lumsden, J. Mitchell, T. W. Rowe, F. B. Sapsford, and G. W. C. Smit3ison. The Board of Kduca-1 tion wrote asking the committee to agree to set apart a suitable room in: tho Gloucester street School for the hold- ■ ing of evening classes in the subjects of Standards V. and VI. The Board also wrote stating that they had appointed Miss H. L. Methercll to be a. first-year pupil teacher at South belt School, and also informing the committee that the Board had decided to have alterations; made in regard to the lighting and ventilation of tho Gloucester street School. The Chairman reported that, <m behalf of tho committee, he had agreed to seting apart a room ns desired for the evening Classes, and his action in this matter wae approved by the committee. Accounts to the amount of £13 15s IS wore passed for payment. The head- I master reported an average attendance ■ at Gloucester street of 1053 out of a roll of 1278, and at South belt of 54 out of a roll of 74. Good progress had been made with the asphalting during tho holidays, and the girls' playground had in consequence been much improved. Messrs Aiken, Andrews and Brunt were appointed the Visiting Committee. It was resolved that fuel for the current yea.r bo ordered alternately from Messrs itedpnth and Son aud Winny and Otley at tho prices quoted by them. Messrs Andrews, Liimsdon ana Smithson were appointed as the Bath Committee for tho ensuing twelve months, Mr Lums- , den being unanimously elected chairman and convener. Messrs Brunt, Lumeden and Sapsford were appointed as the delegates from the committee to tho School Committees' Association. It was unanimously resolved that the committee nominate Messrs John Jamieson and ; T. W. Itowe and Br. Hight as members of tho Board of Education, in view of the approaching election. The committee resolved that Mr T. W. Rowe be nominated as a member of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College. I The Burwood Sohool Committee met! last week. Present—Messrs Delacour, Partridge, -Brand,, Leggins, Bliss and E. H. Little (chairman). The master re- . ported the roll number to be 92, with an average attendance of 75. It was decided to ask the present caretaker to accept a further term of office for the i ensuing twelve months. | At the last meeting of the Richmond Solwol Committee Messrs Fledhcr (Chairman), Potter, Hooper, Dawber, Bassett, Hilsdn, and Hughes were present." Messrs McClatchie and Co.'s tender for the supply of coal and firewood for the ensuing twelve months was accepted. The master reported that the number of scholars on the roll wae 690, with an average attendance of 624, the highest attendance during the past month being 651. It was decided that tihe school take part in the Arbor Day ' celebration on. May 31st and that a holiday be observed on that date. > A special mooting of the Addington School Committee was held last week. Present—Meters J. A. Clarke (Chair- j nii-m), Barry, Burns, Down, Gourlay, ( Ellison, ftfanhirc, Paterson., and Spiller. It tvns decided to close the school on ArboT Day and to take part in the tree-planting on the Cash mere Hills.
