SYDNEY, May 18. Mr Deakin addressed a large meeting
in the Town Hall to elaborate his policy of "Australia for the Australians." Re-
plying to criticisms that industrial legislation should come first, ho said, this was impossible. The power to legislate industrially lay with tho States, not with the Commonwealth. Protection must come first. This would not prevent the • Government seeking a closer union with tho Mother Country.
At present there was not much, prospect of any arrangement with the Mother Country, but he was in communication, with South Africa and Canada.
Mr Deakin eaid that although Mr Seddon had said there was not much prospect of falling into line with Australia, the matter would be looked into in a few days. k
