TRAMWAY SERVICES.

TO THB EDITOR OF "THB TOSS.", ' Sir, —Tho residents of Sydenham will* use tJie tramwey have a little grievance. ./■■;. Wo cannot fail to observe that tbo north end of the city has tramway facilities r_ that aro denied to the south, although, O, this is the most populous suburb of the ; city. Why this should be co is not so apparent as the fact. Natumlly we ; think a penny from Sydenham is worth' as much to the Tnamway Board as » penny from anywhere else, but it will not secure equal privileges cm a tvttn car Take a few examples:—The Board appear to assume that Sydenham people do not want to go to the Railway Station. At any rate there is no tramway service from Addington or Sydenham to the elation, nor is there any consideration given to tliose who wish to leave tho oars at the nearest point tq the station. At the north «d there is an over-Lapping penny section from Baxter's comer to the station; but any on* travelling a similar distance by the Aldington or Sydenham tnamway moat pay twopence, and then have to (walk about 100 yards to the fetation. Again, wo notice that all the northern cars ran right through the city, a frequent ssr* vice running all day between Fapanui i and Chrislchurch Railway Station. ' while all the Sydenham core begin ana end their journey at tho Square. If people wish to go fartHter north they must change oars; and if they wish to travel from the north to Sydenham they must change caw. And the tkme-tahle is co arranged that this, always tnTohrW "> considerable delay in the Square, which is anything but agreeable oa s> winter , * „ ' night. Yet again, we tee St. Albana " ' and Papanui passengers getting on and *> alighting at Cashel and LiohfieJd efaeeb* without extra charge/ but there i> no* .■ -i> tbing corresponding to this for those " ' I who travel to oi- from Sydenham, Surely we are entitled to aa lons a ride for our ■/, * penny as other folks, and naturally ask, , why thie dififorence P To one -who travels at least ocwmoßm ~ ally on all the lines it seem* m if thmtt anomalies could .be easily retnedSsd. Would it not be both practicable *nd lair < to have penny eectione ftxwn Gordon street to the South belt, and from Lift* coin Roed to Colombo street, so as to facilitate travelling by tiam from titesa parts to the station P Then I >TsntvM ' to suggest that some of the Papanai >' care wuich now go to and from tba < station empty might go on to Syden* " ham, to which pkee they woobf eettr . tainly carry paesengem. l£ for t&aW ( trips tho first penny eeotion besmn m&* Oook and Ross's corner, we should hay* , I only what' the northern iMiißiimme hterm t\ had all along, and there would be at least some, appearance pt eqaaUtyv*— Yours, eto., • _ ? . Sir, —A few years back, when the poll in connection with, the loan, for r, electrical tram service was taken (and. ' carried, it wee [understood that ' present City end Suburban' tram Kin* -■ was to be acquired and electrified t* *: " Burwood. This was ' clearly 'Ujpdeiw stood by all ratepayers when eaicTjpaU was taken, and what Has happened P \ * Electric trams are to boeeon running in this direction and in that direction, < - and will shortly be seen In other d&eotions not dreamt of in the original scheme. But. alas, the Richmond ratepayer voted for, and » today taxed for, something which he has never got, ' nor does there seem much likelihood l v of his getting it. Ie a tnotm in-' justice on the part of the Tramway Board to pass over such a thickly , populated area which tlie a%id Uni would traverse. There ie no question as to foe line proving a very payable one, fact, to my mind, it would in * meaenro b.elp to pay for some of the proposed liivee, the utility of which exists merely in the fanciful imaginations of some of their rapportenr, Be thie ns it may, the iact reniain* that an important item of the original echerno hae been lost eight of; nz., the electrifying of the City and Subur- ' ban line to Bnrwood, and now that the election of the Tramway Board will shortly take place, at which no doubt the majority of present members will ' flopk re-election,. I fwoaid ask those " right-minded ratepayers (whom it oonrerns in thi* instance) to see to it that they do their duty toward* themeelrea in the matter of election of the Board* members, to elect members who will not eh irk their duty when it is a question of looking to the just requirements of every ratepayer. The members of the Board represent us (ratepayers), and I have no donbt that when the election is over we shall feel proud of our selection, nml that. our roonenentatiyee on the Board will stand by and voice our just demands towards the remedying of above grievance.—Yours, etc., ■'•'. RICHMOND RESIDENT. I j.y-* ,
