Iα his iboak. ''75i1-> Land of tlie Dollar," the late Mr G. W. St-cove-r.6 gives the following description of Clitt House, the famous pleasure resort destroyed by the earthquake. "By it are bath's, the biggest—but let us avod tautology. besides many huge basins ct water* of all depthp and all temperatures, besides every acrobatic device for not getting straight into the water, besides rows and rows of dressing-rooms .!iko the corridors cf a first-rate hotel, the biggrs: basi.=n ahs a bandstand in the middle, and a huge theatre round it. vrhere ?an Francifioo can hear concerts and see fnvimining shows. Likewise, there i* a museum of -weird seal>easts and Japanese tableaux, antl a panorama of the world. When you are tirrd of that there are gardens wi.h whito piaster statuary, and a nvonkeyhou.se. and a terrace overlooking the

On the right a streak of cloud hangs half-way up the clille tr.at form the northern pillar cf the Gol'ien Gate. In front the Farallones Islands, twenty-eight miles out —the last epeck of West before West becomes Last—makes little dints in the orange flames of the sunset. The blackening roller* of the Pacific thud beneath your feet. Turning round, you .tace the hotel—buey, hospitable, discreet —where they are serving dinners for two in private rooms. A rapid slope? At any rate, the San Franciscans eujcy themselves."'
