JAPAN AND THE EXHIBITION
Judging by a letter received by the Premier from the president of tho Tokio Chamber of Commerce, Japanese merchants have not taken organased t'teps to exhibit at the New Zealand International Exhibition, but tbe president evidently anticipates there will be individual exhibitors. Tho letter if? written in tho weird Eastern charaeteis. The following is a translation:— Tokio, March 17th, 190 G. To his Excellency Richard John Seddon, President of the International Exhibition, New Zealand. I sincerely regret that on account of want of tiniie, we are not ablo to form a corporation ot exhibitors tor the exhibiting of commodities at tho Exhibition. 1 have to thank, however, Mr J. Graham Gow, your official representative, who i« in l'okio now, for his Kind endeavours- to promote the trade between the two countries, and to prevail upen our countrymen lo send exmbits. but, in the case ot individual exhibit* being sent, I hope and trust that your Excellency will give your beet assistance. (Signed) HUHEI NAKANA, President ot the Tokio Chamber of votnmerce. A Tokio newspaper, the " Yomuiri Shinhun," publishes an interview with Mr Gow, a trau_ation ot which e-mows that Mr Gow has been advocating ttatie interchange and pushing our producif, especially hemp. Mr Gow tells the Japanese' that ihey aro not fully alive to our resourc*.-, and likens our natural scenery and climatic conditions to those of Japan.
