THE ASHBURTON PAINTERS.
AWARD OF THE ARBITRATION COURT. The following award' hae been made by the Arbitration Court in the dispute between the Aehburton Master Painters and the Aehburton Faintens , Industrial Union of Workers. Hours of Employment.—From 8 *.m. to 5 p.m. on five days, end from 8 *.m. to noon on Saturdays, from September to April 30th, one hour being allowed: for dinner, except on Saturdays. During the other monthe work ends half an hour sooner on five days, but only half an hour ie allowed for dinner. During June, July, and August ployers may start work at 9 a.m. if they please. Wages Journeymen at any branch of the trade shall receive not less than Iβ 3d per hour. Wages below, the minimum may bo paid upon written agreement between journeymen and the managing committee of tho Union. In default of such agreement within 24 hours the journeyman may apply to the Chairman of the Conciliation, Board to fix his wage. Overtime.—All time over the time mentioned above ie overtime, and for the first four hours earns time and a quarter, afterwards time and a half. Good Friday, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Sundays must be paid for at double rates. All overtime worked on country work shall be paiu for at the ordinary rates, and no employee shall work more than two hours' overtime in one day. Country and Suburban Work—Work which necessitates lodging elsewhere than at the fusual place or residence ie country work. Tho employer must pay travelling expenses each way, but only once if the work is continuous, and the employee ie not recalled by the employer. In addition to ordinary wages and overtime, if any, employees engaged on this work shall receive Is (id per day for every uay co engaged,including travelling days. Suburban work is work done at a distance exceeding a mile and a half from the Chief Post Office, Ashburton, but which does not come within the definition of country work. For this work, in addition to ordinary pay, employees receive 6d per day per mile beyond the radius chargeable one way only, or the employer must convey the employee to work free of charge, in which case the latter must be at the employer's shop not later than 7.30 a.m. This also applies to apprentices.
Apprentices.—Boys are to be legally indentured for five years after three months' probation,, <tiht> proportion to be one apprentice to every three journeymen or fraction of three.
Proferenos.—Any person, <*> long as the rules of the Union permit, who ie of good character and sober habits, and who is a competent tradesman, may teoome a member of -the Union on payment of an entrance fee wot exceeding ss, "without 'baHot or other election, and a subscription not exceeding 6d par week. PrefeTe-nce shell be given hy employers to Unioroste, provided there are members available without delay and equally qualified to do the -work. But Ifaie award does not compel any employer to dismiss or refuse to give employment to any persons now employed by him.
Holidays.—New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, King's Birthday. Christmas Day, Labour Day, and Boxing Day.
