THE CHRISTCHURCH MAYORALTY.

Yesterday Sir John Hall was returned unopposed as Mayor of Christchurch. He holds the unique record, wo believe, of not having once lost an election for which he stood. On tho present occasion there was never any doubt of his being chosen from tho moment it became known he was willing to stand. The only other candidate, tho Hon. C. Louisson, gracefully withdrew from the contest in recognition of Sir John's distinguished public career, and his long and intimate connection with Christchurch, of which he was the first Mayor. A pleasant touch was given to yesterday's proceedings by the fact that Mr I/ouisson seconded the nomination of Sir John Hall, thus emphasising tho fact that the Mayor-elect lias tho entire sympathy and support of all parties. It would indeed be strange if this were not so. It involves no little selfsacrifice on the part of an exPremior of tho colony to come forth from his retirement, and in his eighty-second year to take upon himself tho office of Mayor of Christchurch in so busy a yoear as that before us. Wo feel sure that Sir John enters upon his term of office with the good wishes of all, and that everything possible will bo done to render his task as light and agreeable as possible. That after all is the best way in which the citizens can show their appreciation of his public spirit.
