VIEWS OF A TOBACCO MERCHANT.
A prominent tobacco merchant who was waited on, was somewhat leee optimistic than Mr Jones, for he regarded the remission as too small to bo particularly noticeable to the consumer. "It ie a question," ho added, "whether the retailers will be prepared to sacrifice- the whole of the remission; is possible that they will divide it witn tho public, as was done when, the tea duty was lowered. •\Vhen you come to thuik of it, the remission is only one penny an oonoe, and my own opinion is that as things have gone on so well for so many voare with the duty at 3e 6d per lb, the public won't thank the Government tor what they have done. "There re also an impression in the trade that only 'cake' tobacco is going to bo the subject of the reduction. I may bo wrong, but I was informed so on good authority, and that the duty would remain, the came on tin and packet tobaccos. "Evidently the reduction is designed to benefit tho working classes, and that would explain ite restriction to tobaccos mostly used by working men. il lt is to be hoped the Government will give some notice of the date on which the reduction takes place, for every large tobacco merchant ie compolled to stock a considerable amount of tobacco, and in our own case it »-ould represent from £150 to £200 worth of duty. If the duty were taken off suddenly, it would be a big lose to the merchants."
