PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr R. Fried.'ander (Ashburton), Mr T. White (Wellington), Mr C. E. Bird, and Mr W. Dimock (Wellington), arrived in town yesterday morning.

A number' of oversea tourists are at present in Christchurch. A party of ladies, consisting of Miss Hamlin, of Boston, and Miss Plankinton and Miss Hiland, of Milwaukee.. arrived last evening. Mr T. B. Turn-bull, Boston, and Mr S. T. Beaver, Blackheath, England, are also staying in the city.

Mr W. A. Malone (Wellington), Mr L. A. Rutherford (Hawarden), Mr T. C. Robinson (Cheviot), Mr T; 0. Price (Dunedin), Mr H. Glendinning (Dunedin), Mr W. A. Adams (Blenheim), and Mr R. Acton Adams (Woodbank) are in town. Mrs H. J. McGee, Miss McGee, and Miss Theresa McGee, were passengers by the Rotomahana last night, en route for Napier. Mr and Mrs J. B. Fisher, Mr Gerald Coward, and Mr E. D. Giles, were passengers by the north express train to Christchurch last evening.

The Rev. Canon Mayne left by the Mokoia for Napier yesterday. Captain Brown left for Wellington by tho Rotomahana yesterday. Mr Alfred Triggs, late of College House, is in Chri_tchurch on a visit from Melbourne.

Miss Burke, eldest daughter of Mr P. Burke, who was recently married has been presented with a gold watch and chain by a number of her friends. The watch was suitably inscribed.

The following transfers have been mado in connection with the Christchurch Police Force:—Constable Nelson has been transferred from the Christchurch district office to the Commissioner's office, Wellington. Constable Grace has boon appointed to a position in tho district office, Christchurch, and Constable P. Harvey has been transferred to Cheviot.

MLss Prendergast, on severing her connection with Messrs Andrew Orr ami Co., Ltd., Ashburton., was presented by tho firm and the staff with a set of real ivory-handled carvers in a case. Mr Andrew Orr made the presentation. Mr A. Hendry, who has been manager of the Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Clothing Factory for some years past, has severed his connect ion with tho company in order to enter into business on his own account i.n Master ton. Ho has boeai succeeded by Mr Kenina.

Miss Annie Guy has been appointed telephone cadette at Ashburton., in succession to Mks L. Bean. Tlio latter, who resigned owing to licr approaching marriage, was presented by the Ashburton staff With a gold chain and greenstone heart pendant. Mr Swinburne, the Victorian Minister for Agricnlturo and Water Supply, was a passenger by the Monowai, which arrived at the Bluff on Monday. Ho intends making the Sounds trip by the Waikare, and later on proposes to spe<nd a fortnight or three weeks inquiring into matters connected with the agricultural, dairying, and frozen meat industries of New Zealand, with particular reference to new methods in placing products on the markets of the world.

District Judge Haselden is at present in Wellington, and will remain there until the middle of the month, when he will leave for the West Coast.

Mr Cowper, late of Melbourne, who has (says our Wellington correspondent) been appointed inspector for the Bank of Australasia in Now Zealand, vice the late Mr Winter, arrived from Sydney by the Warrimoo yesterday, accompanied by Mrs Cowper.
