♦■- -. (FUJI A9SOCIATIOII TEL»CRAM.> AUCKLAND, December 15. At the Supreme Court, Henry Cooper Douglas, convicted of having stolen a diamond ring from a dwelling, from Mrs McNairn, «*" Parnell, was : brought up for sentence. ' The prisoner's defence, his Honour declared, was based on tho hope of getting the sympathy of fho jury. In disregard of the Judgo's advice, the prisoner had added to his offence the crimes of perjury and forgery, an<s*the mode of his defence was a greater moral offence than his crime. His procedure was quite sufficient to cause Ws Honour to disregard the question of whether hj? had otherwise been entitled to. probation. He would be sent to prison for twelve months' hard labour. Tom Albert Jackson, a hawker, formerly ranger for the Mount Albert Road Board, surrendered on bail to take hie re-trial on a charge of having assaulted a sixteen-year-old girl attending the Newmarket cookery classes last February. The jury at the first trial (held l|ast session) had failed to agree on a vordict. To-day, after hearing the evidence, th& jury returned a verdict of guilty, and the prisoner was remanded for sentence. WELLINGTON, December 16. Samuel Pearce, for forgery, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
