SWIMMING.

THE CANTERBURY CENTRE. Tbo, Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur. Swimming Association met on Friday, Mr A. Calvert presiding. Tho Wellington "Centre wrote, stating that they strongly opposed the transfer of the Humane branch to the Royal Humano Society or any other outside body. Tliey thought this branch should bo carried out by tho Council and tlifl moneys allotted thereto should be distributed in a similar manner to those of the competitive bnancli. If the Council wero unfavourable, transference to Dunodin or any other place outside Auckland ■was roconiniended. Tho letter was received. . . The Lancaster Park Swimming Club ■wrote, stating that owing to the unsatisfactory position of tho Olub, practically amounting to a dissolution, they could not reiudin, affiliated to the centre. The resignation was accepted with regret. General programmes for Club carnivals were approved. A letter was rend from Mr George Harris, president of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, adda&ed to Mr W. D. D. Bishop, chairman of tho Centre, correcting a misapprehension in the minds of delegates brought to light by two resolutions carried by the Centre regarding tho Humana branch of the Association. The misapprehension was due to incorrect reporting. In moving the adoption of tho report at the annual meeting of t<he Association, ho (Mr Ham?) referred, amongst other 'tilings, to the difficulties which had arisen from the inaction of the Humano branch at Auckland, and also to the notice cf motion on the order paper to remove tho 'headquarters from Auckland to Christchurch. Hβ made somo observations as to what ho considered to be in the best interests of the Humana branch of tho Association. Jn 1904 ho personally, negotiated for tho amalgamation of the two Swimming Associations. Ho wished to prevent friction between ,the Humano branch and the Royal Humane Society, and therefore suggested for tho consideration, of the Humano branch the question of is-Miing medals and certificates for lifesaving. The Council did not intend to usurp tho functions of tho Humane branch, nor to give the management to the Royal Humane Society Tbo letter -was received, and the president and secretary were requested to reply thanking Mr Harris.
