DUNEDIN AND AUCKLAND EXHIBITIONS.
"Going from our own local exhibition, I may say a word or two with rea-reneo to the exhibitions held in Dunedin and Auckland. The former, winch was styled the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, was projected by the citizens of Dunedin, assisted by a grant of £10,000 from tho Government. Mr R. E L. Twopeny was Executive Commissioner, and Mr John .Roberts, C.M.G., president. This up to the present stands out as far and away the premier exhibition ever held in New Zealand. It was opened on tho 2Gth November, 1889, by his Excellency the Governor, Lord Onslow. A magnificent display of exhibits was made, notably in the Victorian and New South Walt** courts, and the New Zealand courts were also excellent. The exhibition was open for five months, and the attendance totalled 625,000, the sum of £18,000 being received for admissions, and, in addition, £3300 worth of season tickets being sold. "I alsp visited tho Auckland Exhibition, which was held in 1889. under tho auspices of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. This took place in the grounds attached to Government House, a beautiful site. The exhibition was particularly well carried out. It was not confined exclusively to New Zealand productions, though they formed the bulk of tho exhibits. The mining sections were a striking feature of the exhibition, which appeared to be excellently conducted, beimg a bright, attractive show. This also wa* a financial success, a profit of about £2000 being realised."
