AWARDS FOR BRAVERY. | A meeting of the Council of the Royal; Humane Society of New Zealand wae , held yeeterd»y afternoon. Present— Colonel Slater (chairman), the Hon. H. F. Wignam. Rev. W. S. Bean, Dr. Rw£ sell, Superintendent Smith, Messrs J. j A. Erostiek, and R. O. Bishop. j Some discussion took place in regard to the Punau case, •where- two Maoris ■went out in a boat on the .open sea at Napier and rescued a body which proved to have been in the water about two months. The Council had submitted the case to the parent body in England, and a reply had come to hand. Mr Bishop moved—"That in view of the opinion received from the Royal Humane Society of Great Britain the Council could not ccc its way to make an award or to consider the matter further." . . . The Hon. H. F. Wigram seconded the motion, which was carried, Mr Frostick dissenting. A number of cases of rescuing were submitted by the secretary, Captain Linn, and the Court decided as follows: —Georgo McDonald Hope, age 23, Wellington, railway porter, for rescuing K. S. Bargh (7) from drowning at Wellington on October sth, 1904, a letter of commendation; Reginald P. Wilder (17), Christchurch, auctioneer's clerk, for rescuing \fm. Hogg (13) from drowning at Wanganui on JJeooniber 19th, 1904, a bronze medal; Wm. Brooke (33), chief officer of the steamer Star of Australia, for rescuing a man named §eano (3ti) from being crushed to death or drowned at Napior Roadstead oa February 4th, 1905, a silver clasp (Brooke already holding a silver medal); Evan O. 31cRoberts (21), of Tauranga, letter carrier, for rescuing G. E. fcipooner, Kathleen H. Spooner, and Hilda Garland from drowning at Tauranga on March 23rd, 1905, a silver medal; Hugh Kelly, Gisborae, for saving A. O. Lunii (5), of Gfeborne, from drowning on May lbth, 1905, a bronzo medal; Edward James McGinn (21), Pukekohe, Auckland, railway porter, for rescuing a man of 70 from being run over , by a railway train at Pukekohe, July 3rd, 1905, a silver medal; Charles Walter Tonkineon (32), constable, Nelson, for rcGCuins a man from a perilous position in front of a train at Richmond railway station on March 23rd, 1905, a eilver medal; Edward Patrick Lavery, of Kaitangata, for rescuing a man from drowning at Kaitangata on August 25th, 1905, a bronze medal; Wm. Taylor Riddock (42), Belfast, clerk, for rescuing Mj-rtle D. Bonnington (6) from drowning at Sumner on September 7th, 1905, a bronzo medal; Henry Nolton (25) and Charles Fenfcon (37), firemen of the Auckland Brigade, for rescuing a man from drowning at Auckland, a certificate end letter of commendation respectively. In the case of Anno Millar (18), of Clive, who lost her Hfe in attempting to rescue hqr brother, aged 12, from drowning at dive on July 3rd, 1905, it was resolved that the Court could not make any award as there wae a complete absenceof evidence. The offer of a cup by Sir John Hall for swimming competitions amongst boys was accepted with thanks, with a recommendation that the donor allow the competition to be conducted under the auspices of the N.Z.A. Swimming Association. Subject to Sir John Hall's sanction to the agreement the secretary was instructed to interview the Swimming Association, to make the necessary arrangements. The Mayor of Grey mouth, Mr J. A. Petrie, wrote enclosing copies of resolutions paesed by the Borough Council, complimenting Mr E. Wilson, Inspector of Police, Greymouth, and Mr W. G. K. Kenrick, 8.M., and Warden, for the courage and y/esenoe of mind they displayed at Murchison on July 14th, on the occasion when the man Sewell blew himself to pieces, and seriously injured the Inspector and others. lhe letter was received. •
