THE HARVESTER TRUST AND THE FARMER.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE TRESS. Sir, —As one interested in the struggle of tho Trust and the fanner, I would bog to draw the farmers' attention as to how it failed to conquer England. 1 have had some eacperienco of their methods on the other tade, and in view of tho meeting yesterday afternoon between employers and Farmers' Union.is&, the following might interest them. In England there are a great many small manufacturers who cater to the peculiar requirements of the district they ore settled in, and instead of running after the American-made goods they build their own style, and thus what would have made the Trust's best agents were directly opposed to them. A great many of tho small factories. ■ in England and Scotland make binders, mowors, rakes and drills, and these same "small factories" are tho ones who really nominate the selling price of machinery. What New Zealand wants is more factories, and this will never bo obtained until a heavy.protective duty is passed on the foreign made article. How differently the large New Zealand makers acted under the same conditions. They nan after the Yankee goods, not that they were better, but that they showed more profit, and you can rest assured that tho Trust's only reason in opening here is that prices ore • good, but with this difference, that the locally-made article is strongly mode and the Trust's is otherwise. The remedy is to your own hand. Encourage the small maker, as his manufacturing expenses are much lower than the big concerns, so that he can afford to sell lower—get more factories, end you will have a larger field to ohooso from, but to do this you must give him New Zealand for himself—Yours, etc., "INSULA."
