THE MOST SOUTHERLY LAMPPOST.
Mr C. A. Milward, British ViceConsul, writes to tho "Daily Mail" correcting statements which have appeared in that paper about the mast southern lamp-post and the most southern mdtorcar track in the world being in New Zealand. In Tierra Del Fuego, he says, are roads that any motor can run on. Tho latitude of the place ho writes from is 53.10 south, while the •southernmost point of New Zealand is not so far south as 48 degrees. The most southerly lamp-post is probably at Usiibai, Tierra, Del Fuego, in latitude 54.50 S. He goes on to say that the whole territory of Patagonia "is now taken up by ehcop farmers from tho Atlantic to t.ho Cordilleras, and practically the wholo of Tiorra. Del Fuego also. In Tierra Del Fuego there is a farm on which 235,000 sheep were shorn this season. "Whether the (southernmost, lamp-post or motoroar track is in New Zealand or Patagonia does not matter much ; but what does matter is whether here or there the land was cleared and settled by people of the good old British stock."
