■♦ ■ I The weekly meeting of the Lyttelton \ Literary and Debating Society was held ' on tho 18th inst. in St. John's Pres- j byterian schoolroom. Thero was a * I very large attendance of members, and J Mr Henderson, one of the vioe-presi- £ dents of tho society, was in the chair. £ The evening was devoted to Shake- - speare's works, and readings from r several well-known plays were given by a Miss Stinson, Mrs G. Wilson, Messrs E. Cook, H. Laing, J. Voss, W. Rad- « oliffe. and H. Cook. Two papers— £ one on the Baconian theory, and one on s " King Lear"—were read, and an in- « teresting discussion took place on the * first mentioned. The first meeting of this year's ses- j sion of the Harewood Band of Hope i was hold in the Methodist church on May 18th. The Rev. T. N. Griffin , occupied tho chair, and there was a I good attendance. A bright programme ! was provided by come of the members j and friends. The officers for tho year j wero elected as follows: —President, J Rev. T. N. Griffin; vice-pre_idents, | Messrs Watson, Preeco, and Jackson; j secretary nnd treasurer, Mr Jas. Stanley, Watson, Twose, j and Jessons. j Tho Railway Employees' Union Sick ! Benefit Society met on .May 11th, the president and nine members of tho committee being present. Sick pay, j amounting to £3o 19s _■_, was passed for payment. Two death ben.fit claims had also been paid during the month, making a total expenditure of £55 19s 3d. The secretary reported that there wero now 412 financial members, so that a sixpenny levy covered tho amount of funeral benefit. Colleotors and members were assisting in every way possible to make the society a success. Several branches of the A.S.R.S. in different parts of the colony had mado enquiry as to the method adopted in starting a sick benefit society, and thero seemod every possibility of all tho big railway centres having a similar society in the near future. The secretary's report was adopted, several members expressing the hope that in the event of similar societies being formed, a scheme would be devised whereby a much larger death benefit would bo provided, embracing all members of the present Death Benefit Fund of the ■; A.S.R.S. After several minor breaches ; ot the rules had. been dealt with, the meeting adjourned until May 25th. The harvest thanksgiving services of tbe Marshland Methodist church were held on the 14th inst. The congregations were very large. Mrs J. Richards preached in the morning, and the Rew. J. Richards in the evening. The singing was well rendered by the choir, under the baton of Mr T. Wilson. Miss E. Wilson presided at the organ, und Mr Fuller had the violin. Tho church ! was very artistically decorated. A j public meeting was held on Tuesday j evening, Mr J. Moore played the accompaniments. 7 The Canterbury Methodist Sunday ' School I'n.oa hold ita quarterly tea and mtf-tius on the 14th inst. in the 1 schoolroom of the St. Albans church. ! There was an unusually large attend- * ance. The president (Mr J. O. Prud--1 hoe) occupied the chair. Mr J. Voss, ' on© of the 3chool inspectors, tendered ' his resignation owing to his removal 'to Lyttelton. The resignation was re- ' ceired with deep regret, and Mr J. : E. Scott was unanimously elected to ' the vacant position. Tho three medals required for the annual scholars' examination having been promised by a ' Christchurch gentleman, the secretary waa requested to present the thanks of the union to the donor. Tho special subject for the evening was a paper on ''Sunday School Music" by Mr J. L. Scott, which was received with much pleasure. The next meeting will bo held at Addington in August. The Christcburch-Lyttelton J)istrict Lodge of the Independent Oreler of Good Templars held its first meeting under the new dispensation recently, in the Albert Hall in this city. - Tho D.C.T., Bro. C. H. Bascand, occupied tbe chair. There was a full attendance of representatives nnd a large number of visitors. Nine candidates were initiated into the higher degrees. The secretary* report showed an increase of one lodge and fifty-three members for the quarter's work. The D.S.G.T.'s report showed that tho juvenile branch was also increasing. A largo amount of routine business was transacted, including the action the Good Templars will take at the No-licence poll. On the 18th inst. a successful benefit concert was given at Ladbrooks to Air and Mrs J. McKenzio. Songs were contributed by Mrs lioesler, Misses Gott and Smitn, Messrs Millen and Ryde; recuations by Mr Gott; and musical selections by Mrs Iloesler, Misses Steele, Messrs Roesler and Ryde. Two stepdances were contributed by Mr C. Bell, with bagpipes accompaniment by Mr Sturrock. Mr Cookson acted as accompanist. A very successful tea and concert was hold in the schoolroom, Templeton, in 1 connection with the annual harvest festival ol St. Saviour's Church. Tea was provided at 5.30 p.m., to which a good number sat down. Afterwards an entertainment was given by a party from I'.eouleton, which was much appreciated. Tho Rev. il. Williams presided, aud a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all who assisted to maiio the social a success. The annual social, to close the eeason of tho Akaroa Boating Club, took place on -uay l'Jth, at tho Oddfellows' Hall, which was tastefully decorated, ana there was a largo attendance. The programme consisted of vocal and instrumental items, interspersed with dancing. Mrs Orbeli distributed the prizes and medals won during the year. and presented the champion coat ana Pearce and Edmunds trophies to Mr Geo. Wholoh, winner of the amateur sculling championship. The fortnightly meeting of the Lyttelton Band of Hope was held on the l'Jili inst., in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, Air Voss, tha president, in the chair. The programme was creditably rendered by the following children:--Songs, Misses M. Gilmore, E. Eamos, C. and M. Hatch well, and Master Bob Hatchwell; piano solos, Misses G. Page and D. Shuker; recitations, Misses A. Harkess, M. Gilmore and Green, P. Dimond, R. Gill, M. McDonald, and Masters B. Green, B. Harkess, G. MoDonald, C. Wilson and A short address was given by tho Rev. A. C. Woddorspoon.
Tho first monthly meeting of the Marshland Band of Hope waa held in tho district schoolroom on the 19th inst. The room waa crowded. The Rev. J. Richards presided. A very appropriate programme was given by the following:—M—jos Matterson, Lena Moles, Southon, E. Wilson, Dobby, Pearl Myers, Donald, Millie Cox, Frame, Do la Cour, Sands, Goodman, Gwinnie Goodman, Louio Goodman, Carey Coleman, Messrs T. Wilson, J. Southon, C. W. Markham, George Sands, Reginald Mvers, Arthur Goodman, R. Donald, T. Dobby, J. Palk, and W. J. Walter. A very successful sale of work and concert, in aid of the Burwood All Saints' Church funds, was held in tho schoolroom on Friday afternoon and evening. The surplus goods left from the sale were disposed of lafer in the evening by auction, end realised a very satisfactory sum. The following ladies and gentlemen kindly assisted with the musical part of the programme:—• Misses G. and M. Hopkins, pianoforte duet; Misses Mclntyre (3), violin and pianoforte trio; Misses Morrow, Hardy, Wnuchop, Inglis, and Messrs Hawker, and Andrews, songs. The church choir also rendered glees. There was a large attendance of tha members of the Scottish Society in tho new rooms on the 18th inst. After tho transaction of business, several songs, recitations, etc., were given. lhe Ashburton Foresters' Lodge held their annual social on the 18th inst., wnen there was a largo attendance. An enjoyable time was spent in dancing.
