FIRE AT GOVERNMENT RECEIVING HOME.
A fire broke out laat evening in the kitchen of the Government Receiving Home in Hereford street, near the East Belt. The building is a honae of fifteen rooms, formerly occupied by Br. Ovenden. There were fourteen children in bed at the time of the outbreak, but they and .the 'matron were got out safely. The bulk of the furniture was also saved. The back part of the building, including kitchen, scullery, and two rooms;, wa* gutted. The fire got above the ceiling into, the " roof, and gave the Fire Brigade • lot of trouble, but it was eventually got under. Two engines and pwo chemicals were in attendance... The water had to be obtained from , the Provincial Hotel, and tbenoe be taken down Casbel. street, and aoroes gardens to the scene of the fire, which did .not facilitate the task of, the brigade. The insurances were not asoertainable last' night, but the damage to the furniture ia estimated at about £100, and to the back part of the building" at from £200 to £250.
