DEPRESSION IN WOOLLEN MILLS.
TO THE EDITOR OF TITE PBESS. .Sir,— I note that "Self-Reliant" has visited several drapers, who informed him I wrote what was untrue, re free importations of shoddy fabrics. "SelfReliant" can try warehousemen- next timo, and read tfie Custome Tariff, and he will «cc that I stated an indisputable fact, which T can prove without any trouble. Large importations are made of shoddy goods (fabrics), which come in duty free if the invoice price is under (id per yard. The colonial mills must pay duty on cotton warm and shoddy wefts, and on raw shoddy if they want to spin the yarns. No wonder trade with them is languishing, when they pay high wages and are penalised as above. No one will trouble about "Self-Reliant" not withdrawing charges; his chargee are blank cartridges at best.—Yours, etc.. FAIR PLAY. 7th April, 1905.
