MENZEL ANECDOTES.
There is no end to the Menzel anecdotes and recollections in the German papers. Here are a tew characteristic ones. After the artist had completed his great painting of the coronation of William I. and hie Queen at Konig**borg, her Majesty, considering that Menzel had not done justice to the ladios, sent old Field Marshal Wrangel to the artist with the suggestion that he should "make tfie ladies prettier." Menzol thereupon explained that as he did not interfere with military matters he would bo obliged if Wrangel abstainod from meddling with things artistic about which he knew nothing. Old Wrangel, who himself was not celebrated for courtesy, replied "suitably," with the result that the artist pointed to the studio door, while Tier Majesty's ambassador muttered as he went, in ft broad patois, "You are a nasty toad," and Menzel went serenely back to his easel. But Menzel's attitude towards women in general was openly hostile, and ho avoided them as much as poeeible. "They are not bearable," he saia, "till they are past 40. Then there may be a few who do not expect a man to court them." When somebody talKed about the charm of women Menzel drily eaid, "Can you eeo more charm in a female than in a male crocodi'.o?" and dismissed the subject.
