INSPECTOR OF MIDWIVES.

The Norfolk County Council have decided by a majority of 43 to 19 to appoint a female inspector of midwivea at a salary of £100 and travelling expenses. Now that all midwives have to be registpred, it is absolutely necessary to have inspectors who shall see that they, perform their work satisfactorily, otherwise -the registration may bo a mero farce; indeed there is always a danger in compulsory registration— tho danger that those once registered will rest on their laurels, so to speak, and gradually cease to maintain a high standard of efficiency in their work. Some kind of inspection ie, therefore, necossary. As the Norfolk County Council is the first public body to appoint a female inspector for midwives, its example in this respect will .probably be followed by appointments in tho future.
