Watkinson, of Messrs Watkinson and Son, electrical engineers of this city, to the South Island Rifle Association, was on view at the range. It is to be held by the winning team for one year, and if won three times in succession, or five times at intervals, by a team composed of the s-ame firfi men tbe individual winner shall be decided by a shoot off by tho members of the winning team at 200, 500, and 600 yds, and shall becoma thc absolute property of the winner. The shield is made of solid sterling silver, the total weight of which is between 30o_ and 60o„, and tta? manufactured entirely in this city by Mr "Watkinson, and designed by Mr H. Rider, an old schoolfellow of Mr Watkinson, and one of the.finest English designers. Tho shield proper is sixteen inches by fourteen inches, and the special feature in connection with it is th_ depth of the embossing. In each corner of the shield are deeply embossed i©presentations of New Zealand plants—toi-toi, cabbage tree, New Zealand fefn, and native flax. The bottom panel depicts a New Zealander in tho act of shooting, the Port Hills forming the background. Four stars, representing the Southern Cross, * are shown, and the centre panel is a deeplyembossed fiddle-back scroll, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The top panel is a conventional one, whereon is intended to be inscribed the name of the final . winner. Bound the shield proper are arranged nine smaller shields, on which will be inscribed the names of the successive winners. The whole is surmounted by nil embossed silver ribbon, bearing the inscription, "South. Island Rifle Association," The shield is mounted on an j embossed panel, 30 inches by 26 inches. Though, perhaps, not the heaviest shield in the colony, it is the deepest-embossed, and is considered to be the finest shield at present' in New Zealand.
