TURNER AT WORK.
There are not many people living who " have seen Turner at work (writes Mr G. 43 J). Leslie, R.A., in "M.A.P.") I had the good fortune to do so some time A /in the forties. On varnishing days a •;?'**: member was allowed to take with him '■• an assistant, to carry his paint-box, and 34 wait on him in general. My father (C. 43-y R. Leslie) generally took mo or ono of 3a,a 'my brothers in tils capacity, and thus A:,";., it was that I happened to see Turner ;:"y paint. He was very fond of boys, and '444 0® no ' on 'Z allowed mc to watch him at 33- work on ''Rain, Steam, and Speed," but vS.;>,a. pointed out to mc the hare running in • '33-4- ' front of the train. It was his emblem 'j?344.bt speed., Just below he had painted a '344 ytaan ploughing, the idea "speed the 343i plough" had evidently been in his mind. it .' '','JH:Turner worked close up to his canvas yA^;'*'AS';with little stumpy brushes, moro like brushes than the long ones Ss'-'-> : ;--'we use for oil. He was full of fun, and 43^4 grwt-tly enjoyed th- chaff of his fellow AoA3 : :'taetnh6rs. !s_|s' j **;'• THE REWARDOF VALOUR. fs3-: ...A pitiful story was told at an inquest ft?'.;|-'' held a few weeks ago at Bethnal green pffA respecting the death of one of those who took part in the "Qharge of the Light Brigade," and had also served |fl?sA under Sir Colin Campbell in the Indian »|yV Miitiny. His widow told the coroner IWi4-; : that her husband had had no pension as Up; ho was purchased out of the service. «My-j ;■'Ho had been unable to work for the gpo" last'five years. They had been in sore Ww'4 ■ *traits. of late, she having had to .keep lfes'Ahef'husband. She was a silk weaver, »|y;. hut in the previous week her earnings KpK only amounted to 3s 4d, and out of this K|S'ss had to "go for rent.- The remaining k|}a'/4d,.added to 3s. that was allowed the |lf|i/f .deceased ,as outdoor relief, was all they |||s&^had.- to live on. Her. eleven children «!*y.y «*ero all dead. _ Her husband had fallen /A out of his bed early ono morning. Sho y got assistance, but when'a constable t procured a doctor death, had taken y place. The poor old woman pathetically ;. added; that her-husband had mado a .■pudding for, eating on New Year's Day, .remarking "Well, old girl, we shall a have a bit of pudding) if we don't have ; any meat." She managed to get a bit •a of meat, bat had to take it back again, v as she was. too broken-hearted to eat. I fler husband kept a list of tho survivors ly of the Charge, and used to tick off the 4 name of.an old comrade-when death re- ■{ moved him.
