CANTERBURY TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

--———♦ ■ The Canterbury-Trades and Labour Council met on Saturday night, Mr T. R. Wright (president) in the chair. . New delegates were received from the Boilermakers' Union, Iron and Brass Moulders' Union, and Tanners and Fellmongers' Union. The secretary of the Political Labour League wrote, stating that a strong -branch had been formed in Christchurch, and that Mr J: A. McCullough had been appointed S resident, and Mr E. Gohns secretary. Ir C. Springer tendered his resignation as a member of the Executive, Mr B. O'Brien being appointed to tho position. The Executive were ap- : pointed a committee to report on the best method of recognising in a practical manner the services of Mr W. Newton, who is retiring from the Council. Mr Rusbridge was appointed a member of the committee set up to represent the workers before the Land Commission. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the various Unions on the question of the expiration of the Conciliation Board's term of office. Saturday, March 4th, was selected to discuss matters in connection with the order paper of the annual conference. Mr J. Thorn was appointed assistant 'secretary. A' report was presented by the committee set up to consider matters in connection with the workings of the Electrical Construction Company. The.Trades Hall committee presented a report and proposal relative to tho question of a Trades Hall for Christchurch. It was decided that a special meeting of the Council be convened to discuss . this question on Thursday, March 2nd. Mr H. G. Ell's offer to the Council ot 300 or 400 copies of his booklet, entitled "Extracts from speeches delivered by Messrs T. E. Taylor, H. G. Ell. G. Laurenson, G. Fowlds, and H. D." Bedford, M.H.R's., on the Land Question," was accepted, and it was decided to circulate the pamphlet, and also to circulate among the country districts Mr Ell's pamphlets on "Taxing the Farmer," and the " Farmer's Franchise." Accounts totalling £10 5s 7d were passed for payment.
