Mr Purvis, second officer of the Westport Coal Cotrpany's steamer Canopua, ; is about to join the Admiralty collier Mercedes, in".; a similar capacity, and Mi Lee, second officer of the Mercedes, will transfer to the Canopus. It is stated that the low freights ruling between New York and New Zealand are inducing the Standard Oil Company to make shipment* of oil by steamer instead of,-by Eailer. ■■__-~-' „'-''» ''■■'-' The scowe Warrior (Captain Seeley) and Surprise (Captain.Fletcher) arrived 'at Wellington from Kaipara, early on Wednesday morning. : Both : vessels ; left the' Northern ports about the;same time on the 6th January, and- they arrived within a couple of hours of- one- another'- The Warrior has a cargo of _4,000 ft of timber/and the Surprisehas 67i398ft. •""' . ■ " ~ . The steamer Cygnet : returned from Akaroa at 9.15 a.m. yesterday," and sailed at 7 .p.m. for Kaikoura and Port Robinson, via Pigeon Bay. - ' '"" The steamer Rose Casey, a stranger ,to this port; arrived at 10:10 a.m. yesterday from .Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island. The Rose Casey, which is a well-known .trader out of Dunedin and Bluff, is an iron vessel of 125 tonß grosa" and 81 tons net register, :hor dimensians being :—Length 102.5 ft. beam 17.1 ft and depth 9.6 ft. She was-launched in December, 1878 at. Auckland, where' she was Ibuilt by Messrs Fraeer and Tinno. and is fitted with compound engines of 109 r.h.p., the diameters of the cylinders being Win and 24in respectively, with a"': piston stroke . ot 18in. The Rose Casey 'Is', owned by the Southland Steabi Shipping tympany; Ltd.. of'Dunedin. She.has a cargo, for this port consisting of "42,844 ft of red' pine timber,', and after discharge ehe will sail this afternoon •for Dunedin.
