THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY.
The fireworks' display in the evening proved a great success. r The largo crowd at "the Port was greatly augmented after about six o'clock, and the streets were thronged with a goodhumoured multitude, who did not seem to mind the crowding and jostling. During the early part of the evening the Lyttelton Brass Band played >an excellent programme of music on No.. 2 wharf. Towards nino o'clock - the steamers and small vessels taking* part in the display got into-line, and" theilluminated procession started on its way round the inner harbour. The steamer John Anderson, with the Lytteltohz'Bv.fte ,l Band : t ' and -those,' in charge $f the fireworks, headed theJine. , -■•'■"■All., the vessels-were, brilliantly'lighted witli coloured' lanterns and lights," the whole forming a-most attractive spectacle. The fireworks, which had been specially imported from England, included signal rockets, coloured.fires, and a*large number of novelties, the whole making a most brilliant and beautiful display, and great credit "'is due to Superintendent W. Toomey,, of the' Fire' Brigade, who had charge of affairs, for the success which attended his efforts. On shore, in different parts of the town, large" numbers of rockets and coloured, fires were "set off. The procession of vessels, after making the tour of the inner harbour several times, returned to the wharf about 10 o'clock. After that a rush set in for the trains to Christchurch, the crowd of holidaymakers melted away, and Lyttelton settled down to its wonted calm.
