THE AUSTRALIAN BUSH FIRES.
RELIEF MEASURES IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
EXPLANATION BY MR CARRCTHERS.
TJnrttd Press Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 12. The Government will grant £ for £ up to £5000 on contributions to tho Bush Firo'Relief Fund. An export has been appointed to inquire into the fire, and report on the prevention of bush fires. Mr Carruthers considers his cable to Mr Seddon has been misunderstood, and a wrong complexion placed on it. Tho view he took was he declined to let this State appear to be a beggar for charity from outside bodies. If outside people wished to send contributions r»s a matter of good feeling and sympathy it was quite open for thorn to do so, but he was not going to accept an invitation from them to become a beggar. He certainly did not say at any time that relief was not wanted, but' expressed tho hope that this Stato was well able to look after tho cases of destitution caused by tho sudden calamity.
