THE WAKAIA TRAGEDY.
VICTIM'S CONDITION CRITICAL. (SPECIAL TO THE "PHESS.") DUNEDIN, October 15. The condition of Mrs Thornton, the victim of the Waikaia tragedy, i» critical in the extreme. She was brought to Gore and taken on to Invercargill for treatment in the.hospital. The woman is physically strong, and this may help her to pull through. Some time must elapse before the resulte can be determined. Her age is about 50. Brwin, who committed eutcide, shot himself between the ear and the temple, the bullet passing right through his head. He was found in a pool of blood. In hie notebook he had written that he. did not mean to kill Mrs Thornton, but only to frighten her, but he meant to kill Stewart. He left a 'ist of debte with directione that they should be paid, and allocated some money among friends whom he named. Erwin's age was a little over twonty years. One of the bullets struck Mrs Thornton below the elbow and 'shattered the bone, another went through her thigh, aifd the third lodged in her groin.
