Apart from stoppages due to wet weather, loading; operations wero carried through in an expeditious lnancer, and a reoc-rd of work done waa established on the 20th ult., when 13,514 bags wero loaded at the four hatchee in eight hours by eight gangs of men. ine Huddart Parkor steamer Victoria, from Melbourne, via Hobart, Blufl and Dunedin arrived yesterday,. and berthed at No. 2 wharf at ».4O a.m. The vessel loft Melbourne on Wednesday, October sth, at 7 p.m., fresh to strong southerly winds and -seas being met with until arrival at Hobart on 7th«inst., «t 7.30 a.m. Sho sailed again at 9 p.m. the same day, and experienced a strong S.W. gale with heavy ecus on tho run across, Bluff being reached at 4.30 p.m. on Monday last. The Victoria left again at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday, and arrived at Dunedin next morning after meeting with strong S.W. winds and squally weather along tho coast. The vessel sailed again at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, and experienced strong southerly winds until arrival at Lyttelton. The Victoria, sailed at 5.15 p.m. for Sydney, via Wellington. Tho schooner Falcon haa been fitted -with n new bowsprit and jibboom by Mr J. Gnibb, of I»yttolton. She is expected to'get away today for Havolock. The New Zealand and African Steamship Company's steamer Banffshire, from Sydney, via Pert Chalmers, arrived yesterday, and was berthed at No. 6 Wharf at 10.50 a,m. The vessel is under tho command of Captain J. Wallace, formerly of the Perthshire, and he has with him the following officers: — Chief, Mr J. Thompson; second, Mr J. Watkins; third, Mr W. Wynne; fourth, Mr C. Price. The engine-room is in charge of Mr W. J. Campbell; the second is Mr W. Cowan; third, Mr A. Kerr; fourth, Mr W. McKinnon; chief refrigerator, Mr W. Clyne; second, Mr W. Butters; boiler-maker, Mr J. Robinson; chief steward, Mr J. Coulter. Tho Banffehire left London on her laet passage to the colonies on July 7th. Sho called at Holehaveri next , day, and shipped 350 tons of explosives for Australian ports, taking her, departure from Dover in tho evening. She had a fine weather run out to Capetown, where she arrived on A-ugiist 2nd. After leaving , that port etrong S.E. to east and N.E. gules wero mot with until August 7th, and moderate northerly and N-.E. winds until the 18th, -when a etrong SJ&. gale, with rain and fog, vet in, and continued for tho nejjt twentyfour hours. She left that port on September 2nd for Melbourne, whioh -wne reached on the sth, Bailing for Sydney on tho lOtb. and arriving there on Septem.bcr 12th. Aftor calling at Newcastle, the Banffshire sailed from Sydney on, the 4lh inst., for Port Chalmers,
where sho arrived on the 9th, and left again !
for Lytteiton at 4.10 p.m. on Thursday. Captain Willi*, Surveyor to Lloyd's Register, left Lyttolton by tho Victoria lest night for Wellington, in connection with ealvago operations at tho barquentino Lβ Bella, which wee driven ashoro at Happy YaKey, near Island Bay, in the recent southerly gate. The La Bella was a steel bnrquontine oi 403 tone gross and 376 tons nett register, her principal dimeusione being:—Length 144 ft, beam 27.3 feet, and depth of hold 12.5 feet. She was built in 1895 at Tvcdeetoand, by Job. Smith's Jarnskibsbyggen, and was owned by Messrs D. C. Turnbull and Co., of Timaru.
