A SHIP'S INDICATOR.
USED FOR THE FIRST TIME AT SEA. (SFECIAL TO THK "rEESS.") DUNEDIN, October 13. An ingenious appliance, M-hich'indicates the position of a steamer atwa, any time between port and port, was fitted to the Victoria on her last visit to Melbourne, and constitutes the first caw where m automatic appliance capable of indicating the ships-position at a glance has been fitted to any steamer. The indicator itsalf is placed near the ealoon entrance, where it can ea-sily be seen , by passengers, and consists of a map of the Melbourne, Dunedin, Wellington, Sydney course, ; n which running the Victoria is at present engaged. The course is marked off into small divisions, each division representing ten mile. , *, and the mileage ia indicated both ways, that is to say, from both terminal points of Melbourne, and Sydney. A small piece of metal repn?nenta the steamer, and this moves aloTig the map. As the steamer moves the apparatus is worked by magnetic contact, innd is influenced by the revolution of the engines, every sixty revolutions producing one contact.
