•A cold, sou-westerly gale, accompanied | by occaEnonal showers of ram, interfered considerably with the enjoyment of those who attended the Eilesmere Mounted Rifles' sports mcctbg yesterday, and marred to a large extent what would otherwise have been a largely attended and successful fixtare. ■'.' Entertainment in abundance was provided' There was an attractive prt>gramme of athletic and other events, a number of side shows, several bazaar stalls, and a band. A' detachment of the Canterbury )_-dneers gave an exhibition of raft building, and carried out successfully a submarine explosion in a. pond near, the recreation ground-, where the Rports j were.held.-. ;.".■•." The Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held sports at Trafalgar Parle, the competitors all being local men, and a pleasant day was spent by picnickers and.excursionists by sea and land. All outdoor arrangements were- consequently cancelled, including extensive volunteer field; operations. The rain ceased' during the afternoon, but the heavy south-wesst gale ■• continued. DUNEDIN, October 12; Labour Day was generally observed as a-holiday, but owing-to the rain of the previous night and the somewhat threatening aspect of the weather, the pleasure'of holiday makers was somewhat marred. The Labour Day Corpmittee carried out a picnic and sports at'Outram, which were well attended., The Premier telegraphed |an apology for non-attendance;
