MEMORIAL OF MR J. G. L. SCOTT.
A fair number of people attended a publio meeting held in the East Christchurch schoolroom last evening to discuss j the question of establishing some cor& of memorial of the la to Mr J. G. L. Scott, formerly headmaster of .the-East Christchurch "eohooL His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch was announced to take the chair, but another engagement - prevented his being present, and a letter of regret from him was read. Mr John Jamieeon, Chairman of the East Christchurch School Committee, was then unanimously elected to the chair. After reading a> large number of letters expressing regret) for absence and sympathy with the object of the meeting, Mr. Jamieeon proceeded to extol the virtues of the lato Sir Scott, and to emphasise the desirability of commemorating the beneficial influence which had been exerted by him. Several other speakers followed Mr Jamieson, supporting his remarks as to the ifterits of the late Mr Scott with much warmth. A somewhat protracted discussion- then ensued as 'to the precise form the memorial should take. It was suggested before any definite decision should be arrived at "that it would be as well first to ascertain what' funds were likely to be available, and it was also recommended that steps be taken to communicate with as large a number of old pupils as possible. As regards the form of the memorial, a tablet in brass or marble together with one or more annual prizes (to be allotted on the conditions deemed most suitable by the headmaster of the school) and if possible α-echolnrship, seemed to meet with general approval. It was finally resolved that the- meeting- should resolve itself into a committee in conjunction with the school committee and the staff for the purpose of raising funds for tlie erection of a brass or_niarble memorial tablet, the creation of a. prize fund, and if possible, the institution of a. scholarship enabling the holder to continue his or her studies at a High School or even at the University. A number of those present signified their intention to contribute to the fund, and a subscribers'- list ■ was opened.
