I—in (SP-t-lAI, TO "THE PBESS.") DUNEDIN, April 25. Analysing the results of the ballot for Edendale Settlement, 28 Otago men will take up 4244 acres, 12 Canterbury men will take up 2078 acres, And the remaining area, 2000 acres, is divided between 14 applicants already resident in Southland. Forty new settlers will come into the district. From 8500 acres of settlement taken up, the Land Department will derive an annual revenue of £3405, or an average of almost exactly Ba an acre. In connection with the barque Hermione, which arrived at the Bluff on Thursday, a curious decision has been given by the Crown law officers under the Preferential Tariff Act. ' The Hermione has been in the colony more than a month, having arrived at Auckland in February. Accordingly, goods delivered at other ports have been landed exempt from the e_Jfir» duties imposed by the Act on factures of foreign countries, but, jjot#.lthetanding the arrival of the vessel before March 31st, the goods discharged at the Bluff will, if 'dutiable, be charged extra duties, because they were delivered after the 31st; In addition to the £1 and 10s totalisator at the Tahuna Park trots on Wednesday, the club will have a Ss machine
