THE ABFESTKD SUSPECT. FF.OBABLE MISTAKEN' IDENTITY. (••BKSS ASSOCIATION" TKT.KUKAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH. April 25. The man ti ha is supposed to be KHis, the Te Awaite murderer, was arrested at Ureimi on Saturday evening by Constable Beattie. He was employed in digging potatoes on a farm. He denies tliat ■lie is Eiiis, but says he knows Ellis well. The constable acted on the information given , him by a commercial traveller, who saw nc- \ cased in one of the Waitara hotels. He ! was brought before Mr Cameron, J.P., at \Vaitarn, this morning, and remanded to New Plymouth for seven day.*, with the proviso that he may be brought Wore tlie Court at- -mv time during that period. Detective Quirke and Constable Beattie arrested him at the house of Mr i'eter Block. He give* his name as David Watt, and ears he worked a.s a dininman with a survey party in the Wair.ir.pa. where he knew Ellis." In height, appear_nc*. and general build lie resembles Ellis as described in the police records. He is now lodged in Xeir Plymouth Gaol. Witnesse!* ore expected from Wairarapa for the purpose of identifying the man arrested. The Commissioner of Crown Lands stule-» tliat he lias no doubt that the man in Watt. He recognised him immediately, and the recognition was mutual. Mr Sladden. a •urreyor here, also knows the man well as Watt, who also recognised Mr Carrin-jton in the Crown Lands oifice in New Plymouth. The Commissioner, Mr McKenzie, knew him well, and states that he was for twelve year, in the head office in Wellington, whither lie came from Otago. He Berved time with Mr Mabin, of Dunedin. The police are arranging for the man's identification by Mr Wilson, of Martini borough.
