Tho vessel was berthed at the Gladstone Pier shortly after 8 o'clock on SatuTd-v morning. The harbourmaster at Greymouth, reporting to his Board recently, urged the necessity of extending the wharf 500 ft, to allow room for two more berths, as at present vessels bad to be double-banked, which was unsafe in the event of » flood. The timber trade had doubled, and sailing ships ware coming to load coal for the Admiralty. There were only two berths for sailing vessels, all the rest of the wharf being taken up with steamers.
It is stated that there is a possibility of the Union Company continuing the Te Anau in the Lyttelton-Wollington ferry service until the end of May. It is also probable that the Takapuna and the Rotoiti will bo kept in the daily run between New Plymouth and Onehunga until the same date. If the above programme is sanctioned, the Penguin will remain in the Wellington-Pic-ton-Nelson trade until May 31st. The Toroa left at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon for Oamaru, whence she will take a cargo of produce to Ntipier. The Shaw, Savill steamer Aotea is expected to leave to-morrow for Picton, after which she goes to Wellington, where she will complete her Home loading, sailing for London on Saturday next. Some good runs were made by the Union Company's steamer Te Anuu,m the LytteltonWellingtcn ferry service last week. On Friday night she made tho passage from Lyttelton to Wellington in 13hr 16min, tho average speed being 13.1 knots an hour. The best run from Wellington to Lyttelton was made last Wednesday night, when the Te Anau covered the distance in 13hr 26niin. Captain Robertson, who has been on the sick list, has rejoined the Rotoiti, thus enabling Captain Lambert to resume command of the Takapuna. Mr James, who has been aoting master of the latter vessel, has gone back to his former position as chief officer.
