Mr J. H. Ballance, Mr W. W- Brace, j and Mr M. Carr arrived in town last even- j ing _ Mr H. F. Reeee returned to Christchurch from the south last evening. Mr Orton Stevens left for Wellington last evening. Mr E. A. W. Smith returned to Kaikoura yesterday. Mr R. Maunsell left for Wellington, en route for Mastwton, last night. Dr. Begg, Mr J. Macdonald, and Mr B. J. Westbrooke went south yesterday morning. Mr J. S. Anderson, Mr J. Collins, and Mr B. Bauer arrived in town yesterday. Mr and Mrs G. Rylands, Mrs £. Reid, and Mrs Hayward left for tho north yesterday afternoon by thei Mocraki. Miss Ewort, matron of the Timaru Hospital, asid until recently of the Christchurch Hospital, has been appointed examiner of the Dunodin candidates in the forthcoming nurses' State examination. Mrs Oxenham, Mrs W. Thomas, Mrs Kitchingham, and Miss I. Kildare-Kil-gour left for Qreymouth overland yesterday morning. Mr Hall-Jones, Minister for Publio Works, arrives in this city from Wellington this morning, en route for tho south. A deputation repreeenting the employees of the Kaiapoi olothing factory, recently waited on their late foreman, Mr John Banks, and presented him with' a gold watch, in remembrance of his many kindnesses during his long connection with the factory. / The Rev. J. J. North, of tho Spreydon Baptist Church, baa accepted a unanimous call to the pastorate of the Baptist Church at Oamara. His work at Spreydon will conclude on Sunday, and a farewell tea and publio meeting will be held en Tuesday. At the boat house on Thursday, a large number of members of the Canterbury Club met, with the members of the Christchurch Football Club, to enteTtain Messrs A. M. Wilson and W. Johnson, prior to their departure from Cfhriatchuroh. Mr J. R. Morrison, who occupied the chair, presented Mr- Wilson with a gold scarf pin- as a mark of appreciation from the Christchurch Football Club. Mr Johnson was presented with a silver matchbox as a reminder of the N Canterbury Rowing Club.
Yesterday the employees of J. W. Smith and Co., Lyttelton, presented Miss Clara Meikle with a dressing beg, as a token of their good wishes on her approaching marriage. . • Recent visitors to Haiimer include: — Dr. Begg, Mr and Mra Lee, Mr ond Mrs Scott, Mr and Mrs McTay, Mrs Thompson, Mr and Mr* W. R. Taylor (Carterton), Mrs Dany, Mr and Miss Ryan. Mr and Mrs Davidson (Washdyke), Miss Hastings, Mies L. Powb, Miss Hill (NewBrighton), Mrs H. Morrison, Masters Morrison (2), Messrs N. Smith, E, Lilley, and W. "Lilley. At a complimentary gathering .at Carlaton on Tuesday, Mr. J. vHalloran presented piterd Brown, who has been removed to Ohristchurch, with a set of plated ware and carver*. At a special meeting of the Belfast School CJoannittoe last night, it was decided to recommend the appointment of Misb M. Saunders to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Revell. Mrs Sydney T. Oox ha* returned to Christchurch from ber visit to the Old Country, greatly benefited in health. Mr F. Humphries, Land Commiasione •, and Mr A. C. Pringle, returned from Woiau by last evening s North train. Mrs R. W. Hood and Miss Hood returned to Hammer Springs yesterday. Mr>W. Brown, Mrs and Miss Brown, of Nelson, who have been on a visit to Australia, passed through this city yesterday. They left for the North by the Moeraki yesterday. Sir Donaid Robertson, a distinguished Klitical officer of the Indian Government, s arrived in Auckland in quest of rest and health. He is awompaaied by (Lady Robertson and Messrs Robertson and Moore. They will probably go to Rotoroa for aome time.
