"SAYINGS OF SIR. ORACLE."
Some old etorie* brought .together under thi* heading in "MhcMUWs Magazine" for October will bear reprinting. They refer principally to provincial magistrates and other magnates:—lt was a true son of Mrs MaUprop who protested in a West of England council c'ljtaiber that "if he was to have his mat omenta contradicted by gentlemen who did not know Tviifyt they were talking about ho could only r*ply that what lie had been saying was a* true iw that Romeo built Rome." In the town of R , a. bargem of some- repute .-u> a local oracle was chowii foreman of the grand jury at the borough quarter session*. The only qneetion for consideration was whether or :io a true bill should be returned apainst a man who had attempted suicide and had inflicted wriou-n injury on himself. '"Well, gentlemen," tli* foreman inquired of the grand jury, "do you lind the prisoner guilty?' , "No, no!" *aid a juror, who knew 'what the functions of a grand jury were; and he proceeded to explain. The foreman preeently interrupted him. "Jus^so —just so!" he said. "Well, gentlemen," looking gravely round him. "if we cannot lind tlie man guilty, at least we can recommend him to mercy, 1 hope."
