Tlie new Railway Department offices, a large three-storied building in Featherston street, the foundation stone of which was laid by the Prince of Wales'on hia visit to Wellington, were opened this afternoon by the Governor, in the presence of a considerable'number of invited guests. Hia Excellency, in the course of, his speech, spbke of the importance of the North Island Main Trunk line, which he thought would be opened to traffic ere long. He pointed to tne development of the tourist traffic, and remarked that with good hotels and facilities for travel, New Zealand Would* reap from tourist- financial benefits Similar to those secured by Switierland. tlnr Joseph Ward spoke of the progress a_d l-iprovement of the railway services during the last few years. Though there hod been a considerable development, the _overnment had, in concessions and allowances, 1 given back to tbe users of the railways sums amounting to £110,000.
