Asquita, speaking at Saint Neots, said the Unionist Party was split from top to bottom. Mr Balfour bad really resigned from its leadership, but Mr Chamberlain governed it. The Liberals were absolutely united on every living issue. Agriculturiste would gain nothing by Mr Chamberlains scheme. Retaliatlon waa only a phraao, but vrm really an impoeture. None of the colonies decked to impose a burden on. the British poor. Hβ opposed Mr Chamberlain because hit policy imperilled Imperial unity. Canada had cent to England more bounty - fed iron than the United StaU* and Germany. Would Mr Balfour retaliate upon her? It was impossible to imagine a greater disservice to the Empire tban the engendering in the masses of the idea that without a corresponding compensation to gain they -were called upon to make great sacrifices in the name of Empire for the sake of the coleuies. Lord Ripon, speaking at Harrogate, appealed to his hearers not to abandon Freetrade for aa unwholesome quagmire. DURBAN, November 20. An enthusiastic meeting here, by ait everwhelming majority, endorsed Sir Chamberlain's proposals.
