AKAROA COUNTY HORSE SHOW

The annual horse show of the Akaroa County, which was held at Duvauchelles Bay on Tuesday, was, on the whole, very successful. The weather was pleasant, and there was a larger attendance than usual. Tho draught horses were moro of the useful hind than show animals, but some improvement was noticeable in the light horses, and more young horses were to be found among the prize winners. There wa.s a falling-off in the numbers and quality of the handy cobs that used to be a feature of the show, but the hackneys and harness horses have generally shown improvement. Another year it would be well if some of the classes were re-

arranged. For instance, two of the best horses in tlie class for hacks up to 11 stone, were thrown out as being up to a heavier weight, but they were not of sufficient size to compete in tlie 13 stone class. There were six entries in the hackney entire class, including two thoroughbreds, and the honours were once more awarded to Mrs J. Rodrigue's Victor, who is now 23 years of age, and looking almost as fresh as ever. At the recent horse parade at Duvauchelles no less than four of his sons were on the ground with him. Mr J. Sergison's Washington, last year’s winner, was second, and among others shown was Lord Loch, the recently imported son of Lochiel, who is likely to be of good service in the district. In draught entires, Messrs Wilson and Fleming’s Good Times, bred in the Oa.mn.ru district, was first, and Mr J. Sergisone Scotland Lad second. Messrs Thacker Bros, showed several good draught mares. Mr H. White, gf Little River, was represented with some very stylish horses, winning in the buggy class with a well matched pair of blacks, more suitable, however, for a carriage. These were also first and second as dog-cart horses. In both the 11 stone and 15 stone hack classes Mr White also supplied the first prize winners. Ln a very fine class of ladies’ hacks, Mr H. D. Buchanan won, and Mr B. Shadbolt was second. The various competitions caused a good deal of interest and excitement. The show was very well managed, except. that more expedition was required in getting the classes ready for judging. Mill. G. L. Robinson, the president, and Mr V. W. Leete, secretary, courteously and efficiently carried out their duties. The judges and other officials were entertained at. luncheon, and the Little River Brass Band supplied good music during the dav. The judges were Messrs W. Thomson, W. Hayward, W. F. M. Buckley and J. Seaton.
